It's final.
This event has undergone fine-tuning, so this post is the latest version.

UFO GIANT SNAKEHEAD ON FLY

Why a competitive fishing event called Giant Snakehead On Fly?

In the United States, there is a famous flyfishing event called the Jackson Hole One Fly. Held over three days with sponsored competitors limited to fishing with only one fly per day, this prestigious flyfishing event has a charitable mission to generate, manage and fund projects which environmentally benefit the future of trout and flyfishing.

Similarly, the UFO Giant Snakehead On Fly aims to generate funds to support, manage and promote activities that will environmentally benefit the future of flyfishing in Malaysia. This is a pioneering event for a select and growing segment of the fly fishermen in Asia and we seek to form strategic partnerships with sponsors to promote and grow this event into a renowned and annually anticipated event in the international flyfishing sporting calendar.

Giant Snakeheads (Channa Micropeltes) are top predators in the South-East Asian regional freshwaters, growing up to 25 pounds. They are renowned for their fearsome strength and prowess amongst conventional tackle sport fishermen. We aim to emulate the success of Jackson Hole’s One Fly by introducing the extreme challenge of fishing for Giant Snakeheads on long fly rods set in the serene but utterly challenging timber strewn lake environment of Royal Belum National Park. In doing so, we hope to encourage the preservation of the Giant Snakeheads, Sebaraus, and other excellent freshwater game fishes found in Malaysia.

The UFO Giant Snakehead On Fly is organized by the volunteer and non-profit United FlyAnglers Organization (UFO) and will be held over 2½ days of competition, on the dates of 11th to 14th November 2010. There will be an initial allocation for 24 participants with invitations to flyfishing communities in Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and more distant countries.

The Giant Snakehead is actively pursued as a game fish by sport fishermen in Malaysia and Thailand. Though quite basic at best, Malaysia is currently better poised with the necessary infrastructure and facilities to promote and organize a competitive international flyfishing event for the Giant Snakehead. As on organization dedicated to development of flyfishing and fishery conservation, UFO is counting on the success of this inaugural event to publicize game flyfishing in Malaysia, and entice future participation from flyfishing enthusiasts from America, Australia, Europe and Asia.

The UFO Giant Snakehead on Fly is a community event that aims to garner the support of the Malaysian and Asian flyfishing community, to generate funding that will be managed to environmentally benefit the future of flyfishing and our Malaysian fisheries. We ask our community of fly fishermen to rise to the challenge of tackling one of the most fearsome and tenacious freshwater predator in Asian waters. As a charity event, prizes will not be rich and only consolation prizes will be awarded for the top teams. However, the winning team will have their names and fame etched for posterity on a stylish Challenge Trophy that will be displayed at Tacklebox.

Challenge Trophy : Team with the highest accumulated weight for all species of Snakeheads

1. Registration

a. Participation fee is RM820.00 per person and will include the following

i. Registration fee

ii. Food and board for 3 nights on a boathouse. Breakfast, lunch and dinner with mineral water provided at all times. Coffee/Tea and cordial drinks provided during meal times. Other soft drinks and alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at very reasonable prices.

iii. Twin-sharing speed boat with boatman with fuel for 3 days fishing (2½ days of competition)

iv. Permit for entry into Royal Belum National Park

b. Registration is open to a maximum of 12 teams of 2 participants each. If there are more than 12 teams registered before 30th September, the organizers will attempt to accommodate additional teams. The organizers will try their best to pair up individuals without a team-mate.

c. Registration is open from 5th August until 11th October 2010. Please register with a deposit of RM400 per team, at Tacklebox, Subang Jaya. Call Nick Ooi at +6019-2025524 or +603-56370268 for details, or email at nick_ooi2000@yahoo.com.

d. Because we require one month to finalize the permit applications to enter Royal Belum, participants are required pay the full amount before 11th October 2010, otherwise the initial deposit will be forfeited. Participants may not replace their registration with the name of another person after 11th October 2010.

e. Participants are then required to turn up at Banding Island Jetty at 0800hrs on 11th November 2010 for transfer to the base camp via speedboat and subsequent entry into Royal Belum National park. Due to the essence of timing for launching the 1st fishing session at 1430hrs on that day, the transfer speedboats will punctually leave Banding Island Jetty at 1000hrs.

f. A pre-competition briefing and flyfishing for Giant Snakehead clinic will be held at the field near Tacklebox on 30th October 2010 at 3pm.

It is highly recommended that all participants attend this briefing and clinic, where the following topics will be discussed and demonstrated.

- Safety
- Fair play and gentlemanly conduct
- Fly tackle setup
- Knots and bite tippet
- Casting for Giant Snakeheads
- Fighting and landing Giant Snakeheads
- Avoiding broken rods & warranty claim
- Rules & regulations
- IGFA record rules and application

2. IGFA Record Application

a. There isn’t any Flyfishing IGFA record registered yet for our species of Giant Snakehead, Toman Bunga, Haruan and Bujuk. UFO is happy to have the support of Malaysia’s IGFA representative En. Aziz Daud, in encouraging all participants to try for an IGFA record application for our snakeheads.

b. The weighing scale provided to each team will have IGFA certification and a copy of the 2010 IGFA Angling Rules will be made available to all participants, or may be downloaded at http://www.igfa.org/fish/igfa-angling-rules.aspx.

3. Auction

An auction will be held during the event, of premium flyfishing tackle that will be available for bidding only by the participants of the UFO Giant Snakehead on Fly. A list of the items and the attractively low reserve prices will be posted and announced before the end of registration.
